Annan Road
In a house by some railway tracks
on the road to somewhere else
~ apropos of nothing ~
there I am
sat in a cardboard box
on the floor in the kitchen
like the cat we never had
raggedy-scraggedy
and frayed as the pom-pom monster in my hand
under siege by a boisterous beagle
while trying to evade the vicious swipes of the Ewbank*
Far below the ceiling sky
and the silver lake
of the enchanted mirror
Attention seeking
Oh yes
without a doubt
I am a parcel
waiting to be picked up
and carried away
~ and still that musical refrain ~
Someone's knocking at the door
Somebody's ringing the bell
Open the door and let 'em in
