Blue Ribands

for Granny and Grandpaw Hunter

Buried in my favourite reference book,
The music one with black and white photos
Of composers, exotically named:
Béla Bartók and Igor Stravinsky,
Maurice Ravel and Claude Debussy.

Sautéing like a spaniel by the fire,
Kept blazing from morning tea to cocoa
By my Grandpaw. I knew he was the best
Though at times he could be my nemesis.
On the putting green he was merciless.

We didn't have long to wait for wafers.
Right on cue: "Sunday, Monday, Happy Days..."
Smiling Granny would appear at the hatch
And extend a tray of Tunnock's Teacakes
And Blue Ribands with hard 'A's like aardvarks.

Hungarian composer and pianist Béla Bartók (1881-1945). He was partial to a Blue Riband or two you know. But he preferred a Mint YoYo.
