Smashing Time

Dusk falls in slow motion
like an antique vase
one is powerless to stop
on its inexorable way down
to the parquet flooring.
Who the hell keeps leaving
these priceless antique vases
perched in such precarious positions?
There is no glue,
no Loctite or Bostik
to put the jocker
back together again,
though I did see some Sellotape
lying around here somewhere,
slanting and enchanting
as it temporarily sticks together
the pieces of a torn-up life.
People say they will change.
Fine words butter no parsnips.
No number of "sorry"s
will mend antique vases.

 "Ooh! I could smash an antique vase!!" was a catchphrase which light comedian and Crackerjack host Stu Francis very briefly considered and then, quite rightly, dropped like an antique vase.
