Cascade
(for Paul Auster)
Too tired to sleep
and scared of what dreams may come,
I spend the night
in the amusement arcade,
missed by no one.
I do what I like:
ride a motorbike
like Steve McQueen,
Marlon Brando
or James Dean;
I shoot tin cans,
effigies of Cameron,
Clegg & Miliband;
wait for pennies,
tuppences,
5p pieces to drop.
Waiting for change to cascade
into the empty chamber of my heart.
The morning arrives
and wakes up the nation.
I get in my car and drive
to the next service station.
